Luigina Mortari is Dean of the Department of Human Sciences of the University of Verona. She is full professor in Epistemology of Qualitative Research. Care is today a widespread term, but its meaning is not clear. One evident fact is that caring is fundamental in life, given that, without caring, life could not flourish. Therefore it is essential achieve a valid theory of good caring that illuminates in its essence the entity of a human being and how it is necessary to take care of human existence. The lacking of a full and complete being that characterizes human life at the same time opens up to the being, to further not predefined existential possibilities; to exist means to be called upon to embody these possibilities. Giving body to the potentiality of our being requires care; therefore caring for life also means committing to achieve our potential for a fully human life, one that is worthy of being lived. To define the essential qualities of care in nursing involves to develop a discussion process capable of showing that care is not only an obligation that the subject has towards him/herself, but that there is a relational dimension of care, a dimension that is ontologically necessary, and since it is ontologically necessary to interpret cure in relational terms, caring for others has all the features of becoming an ideal of existence. In order to define this issue this presentation will present the line of a rigorous theoretical analysis recursively related to a rigorous empirical research. Through this it will be achieved a descriptive theory of caring based on well-pondered arguments and on the results of our investigation aimed.

Alice Jane Haines has obtained her BSN from West Virginia Wesleyan College and her Master of Science in Nursing Education and Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of Pittsburgh. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Acute and Tertiary Care at the University of Pittsburgh. She has worked for 33 years in Nursing and has 25 years of Nursing Education experience. She has also worked as a Staff Nurse for more than 5 years on a Lung Transplant Step-down Unit. Caring for Lung Transplant recipients and their caregivers is truly her passion.

Low molecular weight and unfractionated heparin have long been effective interventions to prevent and treat clots. Potential complications of this therapy includes bleeding, clotting or heparin Induced thrombocytopenia. Frequent monitoring of lab work is critical to maintain positive patient outcomes. When assessing therapeutic levels of unfractionated Heparin, two laboratory tests are available; the Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (aPTT) and the Anti-Factor Xa Assay. The aPTT has been the gold standard for monitoring IV heparin for more than 50 years. It is cost-effective and familiar to most personnel. However, it has no standard result. Each hospital has their own therapeutic range based on equipment that is available. It was determined that a “normal therapeutic ” result was obtained when the patient’s aPTT was 1.5-2.5 times the control. This is now considered to be an unsafe assumption because in many cases, as the patient is actually sub-therapeutic when within this range. The Anti-Factor Xa Assay is recommended for monitoring unfractionated heparin by both the American College of Chest Physicians and the College of American Pathologists. Advantages of this test include less blood needed for the test, shorter time to therapeutic goal, fewer dosage adjustments and laboratory tests,. This may decrease hospital length of stay. Disadvantages include cost, initial errors form a learning curve and that after the blood has been obtained.the test must be completed within 1 hour The presenters will conclude by discussing how a major health system converted from the aPTT to the Anti-Xa Assay.

Jean D. Pawl is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Biobehavioral Department of Nursing at Augusta University. She completed her PhD in nursing prior to consolidation while teaching in the former Department of Nursing on the liberal arts campus. She served as the interim program director of the BSN program at Augusta State University after the program director resigned with the announcement of consolidation. She led the relocation of faculty and students to the Health Sciences Campus and participated in the weekly task force. She is a certified nurse educator with 20+ years of academic experience.

Leading change to create a singular identity between two diverse cultures is challenging. During a consolidation of two Bachelors of Science in Nursing programs, the ADKAR Change Management Model provided a framework for guiding and assisting individuals through the change process. By examining Awareness, Desire, Knowledge, Abilities, and Reinforcement, leadership can foster the desired behavior by assessing individual needs to promote new ways of thinking and working. Each of the five sequential areas of focus presents with unique challenges that may need to be addressed by leadership. Behaviors exhibited in each element during this consolidation illustrate the concepts and measurements used by leadership to move the consolidation efforts forward. When the five elements are achieved, faculty are engaged and energized; however, if any element is weak or missing, the change progression can be undermined and halted. Lessons learned by leadership involved in the consolidation of these two programs included: respect and patience is needed as individuals move through transitional change at different paces; clear, honest and frequent communication is imperative; allow faculty to participate and help with problem solving; and to realize that losses continue in many forms, yet remember to celebrate the successes.

Lori S. Anderson is an Associate Professor and Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs at Augusta University College of Nursing. As Associate Dean, she ensures quality and excellence of the college’s nursing programs and provides leadership and vision in the development, implementation and evaluation of all academic programs. During consolidation, she led various faculty teams with the creation of the BSN curriculum and was instrumental with the various accreditation requirements that ensued. She has over twenty-nine years of nursing experience in various roles ranging from staff to administration and academia.

Prof. Congiunti is Directress of International Society of St. Thomas Aquinas (SITA), Corresponding Academician of Pontifical Academy of Saint Thomas and Member of Scientific Committee of Vatican Foundation STOQ “Science, Theology and the Ontological Quest”. Since 2007, she has thaught “Introduction to Ethics” in John Carroll University at Vatican City.

There are some philosophical notions connected to nursing and healthcare, such as compassion, vulnerability and happiness. Compassion isn’t only a feeling, but it is a moral virtue, and vulnerability isn’t only an accident but it is a weakness of ontic character. For a clearer analysis of compassion and vulnerability we need a clear philosophical anthropology. Materialistic monism and spiritualist dualism try to explain the essence of human beings, but only an ontologically based Personalism is capable of an explanation: human beings are a unified whole of body and soul. Humanity consists not only in being-human but also in becoming human, making one-self human, drawing ever closer and better to what we are. We are human beings: this is a fact. We are imperfect: this is a fact. So our being-human is bit simply a fact, but it is a task. Our end is to realize the potential implicit in our humanity, by developing ourselves in the direction indicated by our humanity. Finally, happiness consists in this task of “humanization.”

Prof.Dr. Gülten Kaptan ;graduated from Istanbul / Maltepe High School in 1977. She completed the university education in Hacettepe University Nursing High School between 1978-1983 .Between 1985 and 1993, she worked as a research assistant and lecturer in Cumhuriyet University Nursing High School. In 1989 she had master degree in fundamentals of nursing from the same university. Between 1993-1995, she worked as a lecturer at Van 100. Yıl University Health Services Vocational High School Nursing Department. She received Ph.D. degree in Internal Medicine Nursing from Hacettepe University Institute of Health Sciences in 1997. She worked as an assistant professor at Celal Bayar University School of Health in 1997 and served as an assistant professor in 1997 at Celal Bayar University Health Services Vocational School Nursing Department. In 2005, she had been assoc.prof.degree. Kaptan ,also served as the Director of the Institute of Health Sciences at Celal Bayar University and the Director of the School of Health at the same university and as the Manager of Nursing Services at the Celal Bayar University Educational Research Hospital. She worked as a professor / manager at Istanbul Arel University School of Health Sciences. She is still working as a vocational college manager at Beykoz University. Aline Neutzling Brum is a Brazilian Ph.D scientist, graduated in biological science since 1997, when started to investigate tropical agriculture and rural development. She started her studies focusing in herd modeling and biostatistics looking for alternatives toquality life improvement. During the last ten years she was based on GAUG University in Germany participating in research for tropical areas. Actually she is occupying a PD position at Nursing School at Federal University of Pelotas in Brazil when started study public health and drugs consumption.

An observational, cross-sectional and descriptive study aimed at establishing quantitative indicators to help monitor and evaluate the effects of the new Uruguayan policy of regulating the Cannabis market on aspects of drug use practices in 9 municipalities in the Brazilian border zone with Uruguay. The urban area of each municipality was divided into seven strata for which routes were defined to be covered for seven days, in the morning, afternoon and evening shifts. Between January and March 2016, the data were collected through a semi-structured instrument of observation of consumer practices, which sought to ascertain the profile of the places where the consumption was carried out, as well as the characteristics of the users observed. Data collection was complemented with the application of georeferencing and photographic registration. A total of 667 users of Cannabis were observed, most of whom were young people aged 15 to 25 (84.1%), male (91.7%) and white (65.8%). With predominant use in the night shift (64.2%), being 91.4% the use of shared type. At the time of use it was observed that 21.2% used alcohol and 27.8% tobacco. For a faithful portrayal of patterns of drug use in the border area and possible changes resulting from the new Uruguayan law on Cannabis, annual monitoring of the indicators raised in this study is necessary. This is a part of report on the results obtained from the qualitative-quantitative research entitled "Identification of indicators for monitoring and evaluating the impact of the new Uruguayan policy on the regulation of Cannabis on public health and drug use in the border area between Brazil And Uruguay, developed by the Faculty of Nursing (FEn) of the Federal University of Pelotas (UFPEL), with funding from the National Secretariat for Policy on Drugs of the Ministry of Justice SENAD / MJ.

Karen Oehme, J.D. is the director of the Institute for Family Violence Studies and a Distinguished University Scholar at Florida State University, USA. She is an attorney and researcher specializing in trainings for professionals on issues related to intimate partner violence and child welfare. Her work includes a National Prevention Toolkit for Medical Professionals. (dvmedtraining.csw.fsu.edu). She also works with law enforcement agencies and child welfare agencies on prevention strategies.

Michael Frass has completed his M.D. at the age of 24 years from Medical University of Vienna. He is specialist for Internal Medicine and Internal Intensive Care Medicine. Dr. Frass is the Director of the Outpatients Unit “Homeopathy in malignant disease” at the Medical University of Vienna. He has published almost 200 papers in reputed journals and has invented the Combitube as an emergency airway.

The use of complementary and alternative medicine has increased over the past decade. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether homeopathy influenced global health status and subjective wellbeing when used as an adjunct to conventional cancer therapy. In this pragmatic randomized controlled trial, 410 patients, who were treated by standard anti-neoplastic therapy, were randomized to receive or not receive classical homeopathic adjunctive therapy in addition to standard therapy. The study took place at the Medical University of Vienna, Department of Medicine I, Clinical Division of Oncology. The main outcome measures were global health status and subjective wellbeing as assessed by the patients. At each of three visits (one baseline, two follow-up visits), patients filled in two different questionnaires. 373 patients yielded at least one of three measurements. The improvement of global health status between visits 1 and 3 was significantly stronger in the homeopathy group by 7.7 (95% CI 2.3 to 13.0, p=0.005) when compared with the control group. A significant group difference was also observed with respect to subjective wellbeing by 14.7 (95% CI 8.5 to 21.0, p<0.001) in favor of the homeopathic as compared with the control group. Control patients showed a significant improvement only in subjective wellbeing between their first and third visits. Results suggest that the global health status and subjective wellbeing of cancer patients improve significantly when adjunct classical homeopathic treatment is administered in addition to conventional therapy.

Dr. June Anonson has been actively involved in leadership in various capacities since 2005. She has been recognized for her leadership and exemplary service as a recipient of numerous honours and prestigious awards including the Saskatchewan Registered Nurses’ Association Elizabeth Van Valkenburg Award for Leadership in Nursing Education, the Centennial award for Nursing Leadership in Saskatchewan, along with numerous other awards for outstanding Leadership and Education in nursing. June is currently a Full Professor with the University of Saskatchewan; Director for the Institute for Nursing Scholarship; and Acting Director for the Office of Applied Research and Innovation at Saskatchewan Polytechnic.

Effective and inspired nursing leadership is required in our fast-paced, ever-changing healthcare system. Point of care nurses in practice and education experience challenges and nurse leaders must be equipped with an arsenal of skills, knowledge and abilities to support their teams. Added to these challenges is that of the impending nursing shortage in Canada. The Canadian Nurses Association (2013) reports that the shortage of Canadian registered nurses will be 60,000 by 2022. Currently, the nursing workforce spans four generations, each with its own values, work behaviors, relationship styles, and motivation (Dols, Landrum, & Wieck, 2010). Harnessing the positive attributes of each generation and supporting them effectively, nurse leaders need to adapt themselves and/or the environment and understand the different needs and preferences of the generations (Dols, Landrum, & Wieck, 2010; Stanley, 2010). It has been demonstrated that leadership can be taught and effectively implemented into practice (Curtis, Sheerin, & de Vries, 2011). This presentation will provide an opportunity to look at nursing leadership in the past, what it looks like today, and where we want to take it for the future. This will support the mentoring of student and novice nurses, our nurse leaders of the future. In this interactive presentation, dialogue will occur with participants, sharing their ideas and suggestions for nurse leadership in Canada for the future. Along with participants attending this presentation, nurse leaders and student nurses (Graduate and Undergraduate) from across Canada will provide input into their perceptions of nursing leadership.

Dr. Hughes received a B.S. in nursing from Boston University, a M.H.S. in health policy with a minor in biomedical ethics from Johns Hopkins University, and her PhD. in Health Policy and Health Services Research from Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Hughes is a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing. She is an associate professor at Marquette University. She has published more than 60 articles and book chapters in reputed journals and books. She has and continues to serve on several national nursing and health committees and boards.

Midnight census is commonly used to determine registered nurse staffing. Unit-level workload increases with patient churn, the movement of patients in and out of the nursing unit. Failure to account for patient churn (i.e., the inflow and outflow of patient admissions, discharges and transfers) in staffing allocation impacts nurse workload and may result in adverse patient outcomes. An analysis was conducted to compares the staffing implications of three measures of nurse staffing requirements: midnight census, turnover adjustment based on length of stay, and volume of admissions, discharges and transfers. This analysis was done using unit-level data from a nationwide sample of 32 hospitals, where nursing units were grouped into three unit-type categories: intensive care, intermediate care, and medical surgical. Key findings indicated that the Midnight census alone did not account adequately for registered nurse workload intensity associated with patient churn. On average, units were staffed with a mixture of registered nurses and other nursing staff not always to budgeted levels. Adjusting for patient churn increases nurse staffing across all units and shifts. Based on this analysis, the use of patient admission, discharges and transfers to adjusted the midnight census may be useful in adjusting RN staffing on a shift basis to account for patient churn. Nurse managers and leader should understand the implications to nurse workload of various methods of calculating registered nurse staff requirements.

Julie Hall is the Executive Director with responsibility for high secure provision at Rampton Hospital; medium secure units at Arnold Lodge in Leicester and Wathwood Hospital in Rotherham, the Low Secure and Community Forensic Directorate and Offender Health in the East Midlands and Yorkshire. Julie began her career as a Registered Mental Nurse, and has since worked as a clinician, senior manager and director within mental health services in the East Midlands. Between these appointments Julie spent time as a full time lecturer in Nursing at the University of Nottingham, before returning to the NHS. Julie’s role prior to taking up this position is of Director of Nursing and Operations at Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. Julie has made a number of professional contributions and gained accolades including holding the title of Queen’s Nurse, being a Senior Fellow of the Institute of Mental Health and Visiting Fellow at the University of Lincoln, and appointment to the East Midlands’ Clinical Senate. Julie is professionally known particularly for her research into the use of care pathways in mental health, service redesign, quality improvement and governance.

Dr. MacDonald completed a Master’s degree in Nursing at the University of Toronto, Canada and a PhD at the University of Manchester in the UK. Currently she is a Professor in the Faculty of Nursing at the University of New Brunswick (Canada). Dr. MacDonald’s doctoral work examined respite for parents who were caring for children who required complex care. This paper comes from that work. Dr. MacDonald has three children of her own.

In this grounded theory study 40 English speaking women from a rural province of Canada were interviewed to learn about their experiences of returning to work after a depression. Women described getting back in the game as being difficult and challenging as they had not completely recovered by the time they returned to work. However, they felt compelled to return to work in order to keep their jobs, in order to resume health and social benefits, and to reinstate their wages. A number of themes emerged from the interview data. These included the presence of stigma, the active pursuit of silence, and battling adversity. Each of these core themes serves to describe the women’s experiences of returning to work. The women described wearing a mask or “putting on a face” to combat the stigma associated with their illness. In this presentation the three themes will be discussed along with a thorough description of wearing a mask. Strategies that employers can employ to ease the transition back to work will be discussed.

Toby Bressler is the Director of Nursing for Professional Practice at Maimonides Medical Center, Brooklyn, NY where she is focused on the patient, family and employee experience and supports the advancement of evidence-based practice through research, education and the application of scholarship. Toby earned her BSN, Magna Cum Laude from SUNY Downstate, Master’s degree at NYU, receiving an award for exemplary leadership and academic achievement, and her PhD from Molloy College of Nursing. Her research interests include interprofessional education, promotion of pediatric palliative care and quality of life of patients and families. Dr. Bressler is Chair of the American Nurses Association Education Committee and is also serving a 2 year term as a Jonas Policy Scholar with the American Academy of Nursing. She has published and presented extensively both nationally and internationally and has received awards for exemplary leadership, academic excellence and community service.

Description: Mentoring and leadership has been described in the literature as human-becoming incarnating meaning and committing to our protégé with enthusiasm and to use impelling, gentle urging. Mentoring is an enduring human relationship that is essential for both personal and professional growth for anyone (Latham et al, 2008). Studies have found that dedicated mentors engaged in supporting and enhancing the work environment for RNs. The partnership enhanced mutual respect between frontline RNs and managers, and administration and improved the mentoring and supportive culture. The evidence correlates mentoring with the promotion of talent, achievement, leadership, knowledge, and skill development in nursing. Every nurse requires the invested interest and involvement of others to fully develop talent, to imagine our future possibilities and contribute to healthcare. The overall aim of this presentation is to educate colleagues about mentorship and how it relates to nursing practice, nurses in all areas of practice can benefit from a skillful mentor in a setting where their involvement might not be intuitive. 1. Define the broad concepts relating to mentorship and nursing leadership 2. Recognize the role of the mentor in helping navigate professional practice issues and work-life encounters 3. Describe the role of mentor in the mentor-mentee relationship 4. Identify characteristics of a community of mentorship This presentation of the role of the mentor in nursing practice with an emphasis on leadership at the point of care. All nurses are leaders, in clinical practice, education, research or administration. Nurses are leaders and as such we have an opportunity to mentor others on their journey. This presentation will describe how nurses as leaders and mentors can advance practice and the profession.

Dr. Wagner is an Assistant Professor of Nursing, University of Regina. She is a member of the SCBScN Evaluation Committee, University of Regina Research Committee and University of Regina Executive of Council. Her multidisciplinary PhD research focuses on spirit at work, workplace empowerment and resonant leadership for nurses, occupational therapists and physical therapists. She is presently investigating factors that lead to healthy workplaces for registered nurses. In addition she is investigating Horizontal Violence, which can be a significiant negative outcome within an unhealthy work environment. Although she utilizes mixed methods research within her studies, she has a special interest in structural equation modeling.

Dr. Wolf is an Associate Professor of Nursing and an independent Healthcare Informatics Consultant. Dr. Wolf has over 35 years of experience within the healthcare arena. Her area of expertise focuses on integrating technology into a healthcare setting focusing on change management, process redesign and more recently the use of social media in supporting clinicians health 2.0 needs. Dr. Wolf has worked closely with various IT vendors and health systems in exploring and integrating new technologies. In 2013 she published her first book titled “Social media for nurses: Educating practitioners and patients in a networked world”.

Kari Ingstad has completed her PhD at the age of 38 years from Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), and postdoctoral studies from Nord University. She is director of Research in the Faculty of health Sciences, Nord University. She has published more than 20 journal papers, book chapters, and conference papers. She has edited one book on Gender, Work and Employment.

Extended work shifts of 12 hours or more have become a common scheduling strategy for nurses in several countries, though this is not the case in Norway. There, many managers, nurses, and union representatives have expressed concerns about whether nurses can function effectively while working long shifts. This study thus aimed to examine how long shifts influence nursing outcomes such as stress, continuity, and responsibility in Norwegian nursing homes. Data were collected during indepth interviews with 16 nurses employed at four different nursing homes who have worked 12–14-hour shifts. Results suggest that long shifts actually reduce stress and increase both work continuity and accountability, though these positive impacts of long shifts occur primarily when all departmental staff work long shifts. Furthermore, fewer shift changes mean more time spent with patients and better communication. Keywords: job satisfaction, nursing home, shift length, work performance

Linda L. Vila, J.D., is a graduate of Brooklyn Law School and Hunter College of the City University of New York. She is a full-time faculty member at Long Island University, Post, where she has also served as Associate Dean of the College of Management and Chair of the Department of Health Care & Public Administration. Professor Vila has extensive professional experience as a member of executive leadership at several New York City health care systems. Her research interests include health care administration, risk management, Magnet organizations, and health care law.

An exploratory study using focus group methodology and qualitative content analysis was conducted to examine physician perceptions of Magnet nurses and Magnet designation. This study is significant because it is the first of its kind to give physicians a voice regarding Magnet. Findings from the research suggest that Magnet nurses are highly regarded by physicians. They possess the knowledge, skills and values needed to deliver superior care to patients and they promote a culture of excellence, not just in nursing but across all disciplines. Physicians benefit from working with Magnet nurses, especially nursing leadership, because the nurses are vigilant about communication, cooperation and consideration. Physicians also benefit from the Magnet designation as it cloaks the organization in an aura of distinction and connotes added value for patients and staff. Key themes emerged related to Magnet nurse characteristics, relationships with physicians, nursing leadership, shared governance and Magnet as a marketing tool. “Magnet marginalization” emerged as a new theory. Knowledge of how physicians regard Magnet nurses and Magnet recognition can be used to inform organizations considering Magnet designation, to attract a high caliber of medical staff to Magnet institutions, and to induce affiliations with other organizations.

Guang Zeng is an Associate Professor of Quantitative Research Methodology in the Department of Educational Leadership, Curriculum, and Instruction. She joined Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi after earning her Ph.D. in Policy Research, Evaluation and Measurement in 2007 from the University of Pennsylvania. Zeng is a versatile and innovative young scholar. Her specialties include applied statistics and educational measurement. She was previously awarded the Educational Testing Service (ETS) GRE® Warren W. Willingham Graduate Research Assistantship in Psychometrics. Her research that utilized the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was published in Education in 2005. Moreover, her dissertation that employed Multi-Level Individual Growth Curve Modeling, an advanced statistical method, was awarded AERA Dissertation Grant.

Her research interests include child development and early childhood education. Her work on the temperament of infants was presented as new research in the joint annual meeting of the American/Canadian Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry in 2005. Currently, she is studying the mental health problems among young children in the U.S.

Debra A. Simons, PhD, MSN, RN, CNE, CHSE, CCM, is an Associate Professor and Associate Dean for the School of Nursing. She is a certified nurse educator (CNE), a certified simulation health care educator (CHSE) and certified case manager (CCM). Her research includes recommendations to implement a needs assessment tool in order to hone in on the mentoring needs of novice nurse educators. The needs assessment tool focuses on specific areas of development in order to reduce unnecessary utilization of resources at a time when higher education resources are limited. As well as created learning environments where students thrive. Recently she developed an outcomes evaluation instrument inspired by QSEN competencies titled Safety and Quality Nursing Student Self-Efficacy Scale

All students in higher education have to know how to produce scholarly written manuscripts. Students initially do not possess excellent writing skills and may lack confidence (Schunk and Pajares, 2009). Bandura’s (1986) model of triadic reciprocality suggests that self-efficacy is a personal factor that may be affected by one’s own behavior and environment. Excellent learning communities foster critical thinking and creativity. Building a learning community that fosters critical thinking and creativity requires thinking outside of the box and involves alternative learning strategies to promote self-efficacy and improve writing skills. Some students struggle with technical writing skills. While some students struggle with motivation, creativity and time management related to hectic academic schedules. Building learning communities that involve some form of peer pressure and support may provide assistance with technical skills, motivation, creativity, critical thinking and time management which can help improve student writing skills and increase self-efficacy. Strategies such as peer review have been found to provoke reflection as well as broaden student thinking and understanding when they compare their own writing to their peers (Yang, 2010). This type of peer pressure may motivate students to modify their strategies in writing, or reject their peers’ revisions.

Pam Bellefeuille is a clinical professor of nursing at UCSF with extensive experience developing and conducting simulation in an accelerated Masters Entry Program in Nursing that promotes clinical judgement skills using unfolding case studies (based on Patricia Benner’s work) and a theatre approach which enhances group critical thinking. Her 40 years an RN and over 30 years teaching in university nursing programs have contributed to the development of this unique teaching strategy.

Traditional simulation experiences employ a single scenario assigning learners static roles as active participants (in the room) or passive observers (in an observation room). We will present an alternative model utilized in an accelerated pre-licensure Masters Entry Program in Nursing. To promote critical thinking and clinical judgment skills in simulation, we've designed a series of 4-part unfolding case study scenario simulations with both active participants and observers in the same room, as one group, using a theatre approach. The unfolding nature of the scenarios and the engagement of both active participants and observers collectively, encourage critical thinking as a team and promote clinical judgment skills. The unfolding case study simulation scenarios are built with an emphasis on QSEN competencies. In particular, the scenarios prioritize patient centered care, patient safety, evidence based practice, and team work and collaboration. The "patient" presentation is the priority for assessment and intervention, each student is assigned a "nursing role" to assume during the scenario and SBAR is used as the form of communication to develop teamwork and collaboration, "safety" is emphasized by including safety hazards in the scenario that need to be assessed, and the students "pre-lab" to explore the "evidence based practice" they will utilize in their nursing interventions.

Dr. Ann M. Mitchell, PhD, RN, FAAN completed her PhD from the University of Pittsburgh. She is Professor of Nursing and Vice Chair for Administration in the Health and Community Systems Department, at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing. She is the Project Director or Principal Investigator on two HRSA-funded grants, two CDC-funded grants, and a grant through SAMHSA. She has over 50 peer-reviewed publications and sits on the editorial boards of a number of journals. She and members of her team received the International Award for Excellence in Evidence-Based Practice Award from Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI), the Honor Society of Nursing.

My scholarly interests include mental health outcomes research, bereavement following sudden, unnatural death specifically by suicide, complicated grief, and alcohol and drug use/misuse. Pilot data from a recent study is being used to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a crisis intervention program for survivors of suicide after the death of a family member or significant other. I am also working on a technology project using a phone application called COMPANION to evaluate its feasibility for use with survivors’ and their social support networks. Currently I am the Project Director (PI) on two HRSA-funded grants designed to 1) teach Emergency Department REGISTERED Nurses (EDRNs) the evidence-based practice of screening, brief intervention, referral to treatment (EDRN-SBIRT) for patients who use or misuse alcohol and/or other drugs; and 2) teach interprofessional groups of anesthesia students how to assess and intervene with both patients and colleagues who may be misusing alcohol or other drugs. Most recently, I and two colleagues received the International Award for Excellence, Evidence Based Practice Award from Sigma Theta Tau International. I am certified as a clinical research coordinator (CCRC) through the Association of Clinical Research Professionals and provide consultation and education specific to research and evidence-based practices.

Dr.Rose E. Constantino, PhD, JD, RN, FAAN, FACFE, is Associate Professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing, Department of Health and Community Systems. She teaches Forensic Nursing. She is the senior editor of Forensic Nursing: Evidence-based Principles and Practice published by F. A. Davis in 2013. Her pro bono family law practice is founded on her research on the consequences of Intimate Partner Violence on the health, safety and well-being of women, men and children worldwide. Her current research is in comparing the effectiveness of Online and Face-to-Face intervention in women and children in intimate partner violence. She is mentoring students in developing the HELPP Zone app as a training tool for bystanders worldwide in recognizing, responding and preventing relationship violence including domestic and sexual violence.

My research is focused on comparing the effectiveness of online with face-to-face HELPP intervention in women experiencing intimate partner violence (IPV) which gave us the impetus to integrate evidence-based studies into the book. HELPP means Health, Education on Safety, and Legal Participant Preferred intervention. HELPP intervention came about after completing a RO1on nursing care of widows whose spouses committed suicide funded by NIH division of nursing. A serendipitous finding in the RO1 was that 63% of the suicide victims were reported as being abusive to their surviving partners immediately prior to their suicide. Because the consequences of IPV are multi-faceted, we are comparing multi-faceted interventions such as comparing the feasibility of online, face-to-face and control HELPP on depression, social support, and other measures using mixed methods methodology with women who have experienced IPV. As a lawyer in Family Law, I see lawyers come too late in helping the survivor of violence because there are now children, parents, in-laws, and workplaces involved in the abusive relationship. For primary prevention to be effective, we need to reach young people before experiencing TDV and provide them with knowledge, social networking, and social support accessible from a product that they use daily (cell phone) during their waking hours in making safe choices and practice safety-seeking behaviors. I am currently working with two undergraduate students in a research project using text messaging as a strategy in building healthy dating relationships and preventing intimate partner violence among college students. Further, I am working with 2 graduate students in developing a HELPP Zone App to prevent IPV. With Robinson’s Diffusion of Disruptive Innovations (DDI) as the framework for both projects, we attempt to diffuse an intervention using an intentionally and deliberately developed product or service, designed as a simple product that enters the transformative research arena as a common activity- text messaging and the App. It OFFERS an inexpensive and convenient service that has the potential to be diffused as a disruptive tool in preventing or stopping intimate partner violence. Our research projects enhanced the evidence-based portions of the book while this book provided robust nursing research questions for future research topics and proposals. I am very interested in collaborating with other mHealth working group members to prevent if not stop violence worldwide through mobile interventions.

Dr Noordeen Shoqirat is Jordanian researcher graduated in 1998 from Jordan University with a BSc degree in nursing. He then received his postgraduate studies in UK. In 2004 Dr. Shoqirat was rewarded his MSc in acute care nursing from Edinburgh-Napier university about care of patients in comma. He later in 2009 obtained his doctor of philosophy degree from Queen Margaret University in the UK. He has an extensive international nursing clinical experience. He worked as an in charge of neuro-ICU at Jordan university hospital and clinical neuroscience for 4yrs and neuro-surgery at western general hospital , Edinburgh, UK for 5 yrs years . Currently he is dean of nursing faculty at Mutah University. Dr.Shoqirat’s research interest focuses on health promotion, clinical placement, pain management and adult and neuroscience health nursing. He is experienced in both quantitative and qualitative research approaches as well as meta-analysis.

Internationally, it is agreed that pain management is a central component of nursing care. Although much has been written about pain prevalence among patients after surgery, research is scant on patients' experiences of nursing pain management and factors involved. This study explores patients' experiences of nursing pain management in Jordan and identifies contributing factors. A qualitative research design was used. Data were collected through focus group discussions (n = 4). A total of 31 patients were purposively selected. Two main themes emerged. The first theme was living in pain and comprised two categories: from sleep disturbances to the fear of addiction and from dependence to uncertainty. The second theme was about barriers that affect nursing pain management. Patients' experiences of nursing pain management were not up to their expectations; their needs were largely ignored and were dealt with in a mechanistic way. Barriers precipitating this situation were referred to in this study as the three “nots,” including not being well-informed, not being believed, and not being privileged. The study concluded that patients' experiences of nursing pain management are a complex world that goes beyond medically orientated care. Nurses, therefore, are urged to look beyond standardized assessment tools and use patients' experiences and voices as valuable evidence contributing to more effective pain management. Unless this occurs in their daily encounters with patients, another decade will pass with little change in the practice of pain management.

Lunic Base Khoza has completed her Ph.D. from the University of South Africa. She is currently serving as Dean, Senior Professor in the School of Health Sciences. Her area of specialty is nursing education, nursing management and health promotion. She has published more than 40 papers in reputed journals and has previously served as an editorial board member of reputed national Journal Curationis and involved in peer review of manuscripts for national and international journals. She is a National Research Foundation C3 rated as established researcher.

The purpose of this study was to obtain the nursing students’ perceptions of clinical learning experiences. Nursing students following the course leading to registration as a nurse general, psychiatric and community) and midwife at the University of Venda constituted the target population. The study used a qualitative descriptive survey to provide insight into the situation. The population was all students studying at the University of Venda and following the four year degree in nursing science. A non-probability purposive sampling was employed to sample 45 participants variably from each level of study. Data was collected from the students through focus group interviews. Participation was voluntary as the study was not interested in obtaining information about a particular clinical setting where learning experiences occur. Findings indicate that nursing students are aware of the value of the contribution that clinical learning experiences make to their development of professional socialisation. Nursing students regard a patient as the central focus of their clinical learning experiences, they are able to identify those factors which could promote and enhance and those which could hinder or be detrimental to their learning in the clinical setting. However, proper guidance and support from their superiors appears to fall short. There appears to be a need to assist both students and clinical nurse practitioners to increase their understanding with regard to their roles and mutual expectations in the clinical field.

Amy Weaver received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from West Liberty State College. She graduated with a Master of Science in Nursing – Adult Clinical Nurse Specialist, with a concentration in chronic illness, from Youngstown State University and received a PhD in Nursing from Villanova University. Dr. Kathleen Flaherty is the Dean and Professor of Nursing at Concordia College-NY. Dr. Lovell Jones is an Associate Dean for Research. Dr. Jones has more than 35 years of experience in addressing minority health and the health of the underserved. He is the former Director of the joint UT MD Anderson Cancer Center/University of Houston Dorothy I. Height Center for Health Equity & Evaluation Research. As a scientist, he has done extensive research into the relationship between hormones, diet and endocrine responsive tumors and has presented his work both nationally and internationally. Dr. Jones’ most notable innovation and service has been in leading think tanks and major events regarding the underserved and cancers, including the American Cancer Society South Central U.S. Regional Hearings on Cancer and the Poor, and the 1st National African Cancer Education meeting in Abuja, Nigeria. In January 2000, Dr. Jones was named the first director of the congressionally mandated Center for Research on Minority Health (CRMH), a multidisciplinary center which aims to foster research that addresses the causes of health disparities and translates scientific results back to the communities affected by those disparities; facilitates minority students to pursue careers in the biomedical sciences; and, increase recruitment and retention of minority and medically underserved populations into clinical trials. Dr. Jones served co-author of the congressional resolution designating the third full week in April as “National Minority Cancer Awareness Week.” For his work, the NIH/National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities awarded him its Director’s Award for Excellence in Health Disparities. Dr. Jones has also received the Ruth Kirschstein Diversity in Science Award and was selected as one of the top African American Scientist in America by the National Science Foundation “The HistoryMakers” (http://www.thehistorymakers.com/biography/dr-lovell-jones). Dr. Jones has been awarded approximately $40 million in research and/or educational grants, either as principal or co-principal investigator. His research has involved determining the mechanism by which natural and environmental estrogenic agents may initiate cancers in hormonally responsive tissue. A grant awarded by NIH/NCI supported the investigation of “The Women’s Health Eating and Living Study,” which examined the role of diet on the prevention and recurrence of second primaries in breast cancer survivors. A notable demonstration grant, titled “Facilitated Assistance, Research, & Outreach Services” was awarded by the Centers of Excellence for Community Partnership, Outreach, Research & Training from the National Center on Minority Health & Health Disparities and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Cancer Prevention and Treatment.

Dr. Kathryn Hoehn Anderson is a Professor and Director of the Center for Nursing Scholarship & Research at the School of Nursing at Georgia Southern University. Valerie Malinoski began her nursing career as an associate degree nurse graduating from Los Angeles Valley College. She continued on her educational path to obtain a BSN from California State University Los Angeles and her Master’s degree in nursing from UCLA. To expand her credentials, she returned to UCLA to complete a post master’s Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) certificate in 1995. To further her education, Valerie completed her Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) from Loma Linda University and received a Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities” for Academic and Scholarship achievement award. Valerie’s nursing career has ranged from working as an RN in intensive care to fulfilling the educator role at Valley Presbyterian Hospital. Valerie obtained her Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) in 1995, and worked for several institutions including Samuel Dixon Family Health Center, Valley Internal Medicine and Nephrology Group and the COC Student Health Center. Now works part time with the Samuel Dixon Family Health Center in addition to her faculty position. She returned to her alma maters to become a clinical instructor at both CSULA and LA Valley College before beginning as a full time faculty member at College of the Canyons in 2003. She is currently the course coordinator for the final semester of the RN program as students are about to graduate and enter the nursing workforce. She maintains a professional membership in Sigma Theta Tau and has become an End of Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) trainer. She shares her expertise through community service by working seasonally in the Santa Clarita homeless shelter, volunteering at the annual Flu Clinic at College of the Canyons. She recently presented a poster at the Western Institute of Nursing (WIN) and a podium presentation at Providence Healthcare Systems Evidence-Based Research Day on her topic: Enhancing Nurse Confidence in Pain Assessment for the Nonverbal Hospice Patient. Valerie has been married for 30 years and they have 4 children. In her free time she enjoys the outdoors by camping with her family and gardening. Valerie and her family have fun by getting away and spending time together while cruising on the high seas. Their voyages have included Mexico and the Caribbean. Their dream trip is take an exciting cruise and sail to all the countries on the Mediterranean.

Teresa Hurley completed her MS from City University of New York 1987 and her DHEd from A. T. Still University 2011. She has taught in undergraduate and graduate nursing programs. Currently she is teaching all graduate nurse practitioner research courses. She is a quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-method researcher focusing on experiential teaching strategies, academic success predictors, financial and academic effects of remediation and course repeats, qualities sought in new hires. She has presented to international audiences and is a published author including co-chaptering transcultural concepts integration in foundation al nursing courses. Awards for teaching excellence have also been bestowed.

She graduated in first place from Hacettepe University in 1989. She won the İhsan Dogramacı Superior Merit Award and Science Incentive Award. She earned her pilot’s license from Republic of Turkey Ministry of Transport. She studied about counseling on assisted reproductive techniques at Liverpool Women’s Hospital Reproductive Medicine Unit in United Kingdom on the British Council Research Scholarship. She earned a certificate in management and leadership in nursing. She is an active member of Thematic Network leadership work group. She studied as a research scholar at Kent State University College of Nursing in 2006 for 3 months. In 2007, she worked on a project named “Development of Leadership Skills in Nursing Doctoral Students” at University of Michigan Faculty of Nursing on an international research scholarship which was supported by International Network for Doctoral Education in Nursing (INDEN) and Sigma Theta Tau and provided to only three people around the world every year. She worked as a research assistant at Hacettepe University School of Nursing in the Maternity and Women's Health Nursing Division from 1990 to 1997. She was promoted to assistant professor in 1998, associate professor in 2006 and professor in 2012. She worked as a Co-Head of Nursing Department, Erasmus Department Coordinator, Head of Strategic Planning Group and board member of Hacettepe University Women’s Research and Implementation Center (HUWRICH) between 2009 and 2011. Her interest subjects are sexuality and reproductive health and management and leadership. She is member of national and international nurse’s organizations such as INDEN and Sigma Theta Tau. She has been working as a Director of Nursing Services at Hacettepe University Hospitals since September 2012 and Founding Dean of Faculty of Nursing between 2012- 2013. She has published more than 50 papers, 15 grant projects, eight books as an editor and author, and 90 presentation in the national and international congress. Colin L. Soskolne, PhD (Doctor of Philosophy in Epidemiology), Professor emeritus, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He had been with the University of Alberta since 1985, and from which he retired on June 30, 2013. Since November 2012, Dr. Soskolne has had a formal relationship with the University of Canberra, Australia, where he was Visiting Fellow through December, 2013. His appointment there as Adjunct Professor was formalized (July, 2013 to June, 2016).

Soskolne's focus is on the public health implications of declines in ecological integrity, locally, regionally and globally. He is recognized for the use of epidemiological methods — through the sub-specialty of "eco-epidemiology" — to inform this line of research. Furthermore, he is interested in the policy implications of global change for public health, and in bridging professional ethics and epidemiological methods in risk management for policy and law.

Viacheslav A. Lipatov is currently the General Director of MedTestInfo, a small innovative company under Kursk State Medical University and Professor of the Department of Operative Surgery and Topographic Anatomy of Kursk State Medical University, Kursk, Russia. Cheryl Mele is a Neonatal and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner for over 20 years. She completed her masters degree at the University of Pennsylvania. She is currently enrolled in a doctoral program at Touro University Nevada, USA. Her capstone project involves preparing health professionals, especially advance practice nurses in communicating bad news or relational crisis to patients/ families by utilizing technological pedagogical models . She is the director of Dual and Acute Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Program at Drexel Univeristy, a premier College of Nursing and Health Professionals.
